The Drew Ritchie Agency Recognizes Toy Safety Month

In the past few years, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has reported alarming numbers of ER visits due to toy-related injuries. For this reason, CPSC has created a list of things to keep in mind so as to promote toy safety. The Drew Ritchie Agency is all about fun, but with safety in mind! Thanks to the efforts of CPSC, toys are tested prior to reaching the market shelf, but after that it is up to the public to make the right decisions regarding which toys to purchase for their children. Did you know that December is toy safety month? With Christmas around the corner, it’s no wonder! As you scramble to finish your shopping for this Christmas, keep these toy safety tips top of mind.

Toy safety tips on behalf of your Enid insurance agent:

1.) Balloons are a choking hazard. Keep balloons away from young children.
2.) Small balls can be a choking hazard to toddlers.
3.) Avoid toys with small parts for children younger than 3 years of age.
4.) Riding/skating toys allows deadly falling. Promote use of helmets and safety gear.
5.) High-powered magnet sets are dangerous and should be kept away from children.
6.) Toys with strings, straps, or cords longer than 7 inches may cause strangulation.
7.) Cap guns can be ignited by the slightest friction and cause serious burns.
8.) Avoid toys with sharp points or edges.

We tend to side with CPSC in telling you that you should inspect all toys as much as possible before taking them out of the box. Once opened, go through each part of the toy to make sure there are no small parts that could be choking hazards. Some of the safety tips may be more or less relevant depending on your child’s age.

The Drew Ritchie Agency recommends using good judgment and pay attention to age appropriate toys to give. Most toy packaging has a recommended age group. If you have children that are old enough to handle some of the smaller part toys, just be aware and keep them away from younger siblings.

On behalf of The Drew Ritchie Agency, we wish you a safe and Merry Christmas!
