STEM & Teacher Appreciation Assembly At Garfield Elementary

A lot of business owners think about ways in which to give back to the community, but making it happen often takes time and planning. Drew Ritchie, of Farmers Insurance, had so much fun last year (read about that here) sponsoring a STEM assembly for a local elementary school that he wanted to do it again for another school. Fast forward to May of 2017 and finally Drew’s plan to put on another STEM assembly became a reality! He partnered with Kristi Miller, of Prime Lending, to sponsor this year’s STEM assembly for Garfield Elementary school in Enid, OK.

Together, the two of them sought to give back by coordinating with Mad Science to provide the students with a fun-filled and educational assembly while also honoring a teacher for all of her hard work. The idea behind this STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) related assembly was for students to imagine themselves making their own goals and dreams come true one day. Furthermore, Mad Science’s goal is to spark an interest in children so that they may decide to pursue STEM related careers in their future.

The excitement began on May 18th, 2017 at when the Mad Science representative deemed “Professor Elemental” conducted the opening STEM assembly introductions. The assembly continued with one thrilling experiment after another in which Professor Elemental called children from every grade level to participate.

The twist came at the end of the show when, Charla Harris (a 1st grade teacher), was called upon the stage to help with the final experiment.

Charla had no idea that the administrative staff at the school had worked with Drew and Kristi and had chosen her to participate in the final experiment. Charla’s final surprise came at the end of that experiment when she was presented with a $50 Amazon gift card and a Certificate Of Appreciation (on behalf of Farmers and Prime Lending) for her contribution to Garfield Elementary.

The assembly seemed to have gone over very well with the students and one teacher even stated: “My class loved it and learned a little something! Thanks so much.”

Of course, it truly was our pleasure to give back to such a deserving community! Our Enid insurance team and Kristi Miller loved seeing the students get so excited about learning new things!
